The land, a beautiful patch of forest with trees that from the view of the earth, looked as though they reached to the sky. They served serveral purposes, these trees, bringing shade to the earth and giving the wildlife a reprieve from the harsh rays of the sun for at least a short while. They created homes for the small, tree dwelling creatures like squirrels and birds as well as providing a variety of food for all levels of life. Fruit of sorts grew from the branches of some, while nuts developed on others. For the most part, the trees where a wonderful creation from nature. Currently, there where offering housing to a wide range of fowl, some small while others, though not gigantically large, where plump enough to offer a good mean to any larger animal that might be lucky enough to snag one. The types of the birds where unknown, but when it was a wolf eyeing them, the type didn't exactly matter. What mattered was how big they where and if they'd be easy to catch.
Below, pacing at the base of a large tree, was a curious make of a wolf. He was not what one would think to be the ideal image of his speicies, but his coat was brilliant. Where he lacked in size and strength, he made up in beauty. A mixture of golden browns, several shades of grey and several hues of cream created the creature that was the Grey Wolf. Intense, steelblue eyes, narrowed hungerily at a plup drab colored bird, who was completely aware of his presence below. It didn't show any signs of distress, knowing that while the wolf could be dangerous, he was plenty high in the tree. Laying his ears back, the wolf barked, hoping to startle the feathery rat, but it wasn't going to happen. It was obvious that the bird had the upper hand and that the wolf was not going to be getting a meal, yet the male was stubborn and not about to give up that easily.
Casting a hateful glance at the bird, he wheeled around and plodded off between to thick shrubs and vanished from sight. The bird sat silently, gazing intently at where the wolf had gone and believing him to have given up, fluttered down to a lower branch, having spied a plump caterpillar inching its way along the branch towards what it believed to be a wonderful, delicious meal of fresh leaves. Instead, the bird snatched it up before it had any idea of what was happening and glupped the bug down. It was at this moment that the male wolf came springing into view and made an impressive leap at the lower branch, jaws open and snapping close as he reached the height of the jump. His teeth clamped shut on nothing but air, having fallen short by a foot and he landed heavily below, angrier then he had been before. The bird, startled had taken to the air, its panic leaking out to the other birds who also burst from the trees and into the sky in a great weave of feathers and fear.
Anger settled over the male and unable to control the rage boiling over, he spun around in a spastic circle, aiming to grab hold of his own tail, angry snarls errupting from his bared jaws. After several moments of turning in tight circles and trying to catch his own tail and take the anger he was feeling out on it, he stopped, ears laid back and steelblue gaze aimed back up at the tree where the birds had been. Now, isntead of the birds, a squirrel sat perched on the higher branch, staring down at him with an expressionless face. The silence streched between them for some time, before the squirrel, tired of the wolf's company, let out an annoyed chrip and scrambled higher up the tree into the thick cover of leaves. Bristling, the male whirled from the tree and stalked off in hopes of finding another potential meal. It was as he changed directions, that he moved into the wind, new, fresh scents drifting into his senstive nostrils. For a breif moment, the wolven scents went unnoticed--but they registered not long after he inhaled them. Wolves where near, yet he had not found the boundry. Or had it? He paused, casting a glance over his shoulder curiously and then dropped his muzzle to the earth, inhaling deeply. He had crossed it several yards back. Growing suddenly anxious with his mishap, he backtracked quickly, circling several times around a bush where the pack scent was the heaviest.
Tilting his head curiously, he snuffed at the scent again, attempting to decide just what sort of message it was leaving behind. It was a clear message. This land is claimed. He had had his share of run-ins with owners of such territories and most did not take kindly to his company. There were plenty of ways he could go about this. He could attempt to slip through unnoticed and run the risk of being discovered and slaughtered on sight. He could set up a call and wait, but that could take days and he wasn't willing to wait. He could set up a call and seek out the leader himself. Throwing his head back, he emitted a call, a short, not very impressive sounding call, but it would have to do. With his tail twitching as though it had a mind of its very own, he leapt gracefully over the invisible territory line and set off in some direction that he had picked at random. He wasn't exactly following any particular scent that would lead him to a wolf, but then again, he hadn't exactly thouoght about doing that. He would walk...and walk until he found someone.

It was a beautiful day - and a great day for running. As the adolescent wolf that was Taint loped over the seemingly endless lands that he now belonged to, he grinned. Letting his tongue loll from the side of his maw, he yelped a delighted bark. The sun was hot on his back, but did he care? Of couse not! He was a wolf, was he not? A proud, wild, free wolf. A wolf of these lands. Bounding over a fallen tree limb, Taint looked up towards the sky. The sun was blinding; it glared in his eyes, and so he looked down, slightly frustrated. Stopping for a moment, his fur slick with sweat, Taint took deep breaths in and out. He surveyed the land, a happy smile on his maw. His tail wagging behind him, he blinked his tawny eyes once, taking in the sights. Oh, so beautiful. It wasn't until then that he scented the faint smell on the air; another male wolf. Taint began to pad slowly forwards, into the undergrowth. He was nervous, but also excited. Here he could prove himself to Gavin; that he could be responsible and mature in the face of possible danger. His orbs widened as he tried to be as observant as he possibly could be. There. Ahead of him - another wolf. The beginnings of a snarl rippled on his black and gold muzzle, as he sized up the cream, brown and grey wolf. Was he strong? ...It looked like it, Taint grudgingly admitted to himself. He sneakd forwards, until... Crack! A branch snapped loudly underpaw. Crap! Swore the young male. Shaking his head, Taint was forced to admit it; the element of suprise was gone. He poked his head up from the bushes, then stepped out completely. About to say something, Taint stopped - Weston? Was it...Wess? 'Weston!' Cried the black wolf ecstaticly - a wolf from his past! Did he remember? Bounding over to where his old friend stood, Taint leapt onto the other wolf, covering him in wet slobber. He nosed Weston thoroughly before pinning him to the ground, grinning hyperly like a puppy. 'Weston! It's me, Taint!' laughed the young wolf - but he had doubts in his mind. Would Wes remember him?

The male had allowed his mind to drift as he traveled, his steelblue gaze drifting towards the tree tops in hopes of spotting anything that might make a good meal. He was hungry and was growing irritated at the fact that there had been nothing to eat for some time. It was lucky that the male hadn't yet run into anything with his gaze locked on the trees over head. It would look as though he was on line to run nose first into a tree, but when it appeared he'd he was just about to hit it, he'd side-step and avoid it all together. Skill, perhaps? Probably not. It was probably just luck. He had never been very skilled and so it was unlikely that he had intentially avoided the tree.
He was drawn from his search of food by the snap of a twig, both ears pricking up curiously, his narrow skull swivling in the direction that the sound had come from. For a moment, he remained motionless, save for the unnatural twitching of his tail, his bright eyes wide and unwavering. It was when the vision of the male poking his head through the brush that Weston felt a wave of unease, stepping back and bristling every so slightly. Unfortunately, recongnition did not happen as fast in Weston's brian as it had in the other male's because when the male leapt out and onto him, covering him in a friendly, but slobbery greeting, Weston was still at a loss. He did not react, but stood there, attempting to arrival all that was happening. The male knew his name! Perhaps it was an admirer. Someone who looked up to him. That could be it.
But when the male finally voiced his own name, Weston's brain started clicking. Taint. Taint.. the name was familiar but from what..? A brother of a female he had followed? No... thats not it. Not at all. Had he done something to his male or his family? No... that couldn't be it either. Finally, it hit him. Puphood! This male was from his puphood! Slipping away from the male, he stood back, front legs braced in front of him and his bright eyes narrowed. "You fool! You could have smoothered me! I could have DIED. How would you have felt then?!" It was truely not the best way to greet an old friend, however, if Taint remembered him correctly, then it wouldn't be that big of a surprise.
It was often whispered that perhaps, Weston had been born with some sort of brain defect, making him the way he was. He was unlike the other pups growing up, not as playful and loving, but he did enjoy the attention. His playing was often rough and when the others returned the level of play to him, he would often claim that they were attempting to kill him and smoother the others in guilt. He had a way of making others feel bad no matter what they where doing.

There was naught but bloody tatters of fur and skin to give evidence to the cony that was now being thoroughly digested within the stomach of the wolf- well, that and the evidently happy growl of sorts that he emitted as his heavy head came to rest on black paws, cerulean eyes glinting from within the spacious, yawning mouth of his den. Glancing down and spotting a flagrant streak of vermilion color sullying the previously immaculate fur of his paw, the lupine frowned and quickly set to work on the removal of the stain, salmon tongue darting rapidly. It was then, in mid-lick, that a rather faint- and wholly unfamiliar- call grasped the wholehearted attention of his senses. Unfolding and rising to elegant limbs with a finesse that belied his build, the Alpha padded to the cave's ingress, guttural growl rumbling from from his breast before it spilled into his own riposting howl, albeit much deeper, and more powerful as well. There was no doubt that the first howl in all of its brevity did not belong to any member of his pack, and so Gavin's held a rather complex message: you have been heard; stay where you are and venture no further. Of course, the likelihood of this exact dispatch being interpreted in the precise style that the leader wished for it to be was dubious at best- with a quick glance around the densite, Gavin ascertained that his rank-holders were at peace and so had no qualms with withdrawing. It was times like these, however, that he wanted to bite the proverbial bullet and simply choose a Beta, though all good instincts told him that to appoint a wolf a position of such high honor was a decision that must be weighed, measured, and thought about over a series of several weeks. While he did not doubt his members' loyalty, the initial granite layer of trust had not yet been deposited, and so, inwardly at least, he remained wary.
The initial realization only intensified when a foreign scent wafted toward his nostrils, though it was laced with one that was recognizable: Taint. Suppressing a frown, the Alpa instead increased his pace, shifting from an easy-going trot to a lope, great head swinging side to side as his eyes darted, searching for either of the two. The newcomer was quite obviously male, as the smell was lacking the feminine musk of estrogen that he had recently become so accustomed to. His train of thought was lost, however, as voices pricked his ginger-based auds forward- neither of them sounded particularly happy, from what he could tell at this distance; while Taint had proffered nothing but a rude first impression, he was a valued wolf nonetheless and any rogue that dared to instigate brawls with any Haden Valley member would, without doubt, pay the price. The medic apprentice was not a small wolf, but he was not exceptional in height or weight either (then again, what wolf was exceptional in height or weight when placed beside the behemoth Alpha?), and if the louse that felt it was appropriate to goad held decent weight over him, there was no way for the brindled mann to ensure that the medic-to-be would come out of a scrape the victor.
Within moments the offending wolf was in Gavin's line of sight, and the Alpha's cyan eyes narrowed dangerously, the faint glitter of a threat just visible as he slowed, raising his tail and stalking forward, obviously intent on intimidating. A deep growl bubbled from his lips as he approached, staring pointedly at the small stranger whose limbs were locked in evident reinforcement. Padding past Taint, who seemed far too giddy for the situation at hand, the Alpha flicked his tail before addressing the young wolf. “It is preferable for strangers to wait at marked boundaries before trespassing into territories. What business do you have with Haden Valley?” Perhaps if the male had not seemed so dwarfed in comparison, or had been caught attacking Taint, the leader would have reacted in a far more wrathful fashion- but for now, there seemed to be no real threat, and Taint, bar his perpetual infantile conduct, bore no wounds that were visibl e to the hawkish orbs of the Alpha. Of course, Gavin did feel that Taint had credit due- unlike the rest of the pack, who were lounging at the den area, he had been making himself useful- or, in the very least, had tried. FLY L E A F ;;
Wait, didn’t that tree look exactly the same as that other one…?
How pathetic. Flyleaf had wished, no even promised herself, that she would not get lost. It was all pack of her join-a-pack-do-not-become-a-nuisance-to-Gavin plan, and she had just royally destroyed it. The young she-wolf had wanted to believe that it was not entirely her fault: after all, the trees did seem quite alike, but with her head bowed into a deep, sorrowful fashion, Fly had admitted defeat.
And so she walked, without aim, listening for familiar voices: that of Taint, Jessi, Anevay; even of the great Gavin himself. The young wolf also searched for figures. It was almost with slight hope that she wished someone would possibly hear her: her bouncy paws hitting the earth with immense violence, or her muttering about how stupid she was. So, with one ear cocked forward and maintaining being as noisy as possible, Flyleaf trudged on.
It was when she began to give up hope that she heard them. It sounded like two males, mostly bickering; a cold chill ran through the she-wolf’s body when the thought that she may have stumbled into another territory hit her. Yet, as she slowly headed into the area where the voices where, she thought she heard a familiar: Taint, maybe? No, it couldn’t be. What was he doing so close to the pack borderline? She hadn’t been gone so long that he had become a scout? Would Gavin even remember poor little Flyleaf?
Almost as if her low-esteem thoughts had summoned him, however, Fly head the great Alpha’s voice mingled with the others’. His low timber was extremely recognizable; she had no doubt it was him. Running out of her surrounds and into those of the others, she called out, almost childishly:
“Gavin! Oh, Sir! Thank goodness I found you! I...I got lost!”
The last three words were said sheepishly: hopefully he didn’t consider her to be too stupid. Fly had yet had the opportunity to show him her skills with herbs, and the last thing she wanted to do was be exiled because she did not seem to be the brightest in the bunch.
It, quite naturally, did not occur to the she-wolf what Taint, and now that she was in the middle of them all, the other stranger thought, but as she realized now that she had embarrassed herself quite profoundly in their gaze, Fly quickly took a step back, hiding herself behind her Alpha. No, she was not a freak show, no.

The male, while momentarily distracted by the sudden arrival of a gigantic male and a nearly obnoxious female, (this he decided by just the sound of her voice.) sat silently, eyes opened wide in either true or mock surprise, the true feeling was unknown. All that was clear was that he was sitting still and quiet, nonetheless. While he sat silent and unmoving, well almost unmoving, it was obvious that he was neither impressed nor bored by the arrival. Instead, his face remained a mask, grey-blue eyes flickering from wolf to wolf, hovering on each one for a brief moment before continuing on. There was a clear twitch of the muscle in his jaw, like he was making a motion to snarl at them, yet he wasn't completeing the act. There was also the fact that the rest of his face was not taking on the look of anger or fear.
Yet, there was no real way to explain the uncontrolled muscle movement, yet it continued, at least until he rose and stepped back, returning his gaze towards Gavin, though this time, his eyes were narrowed critically. It was clear that the large male was no doubt the leader while Taint was simply a member. The female seemed to be a member too, though he hardly liked the look of her. Wrinkling his nose unhappily, he broke the silence. "I was being chased by other wolves. I thought it safer to come in." While there was absolutely no truth to his claim, he didn't care. He needed a decent reason for having crossed upon claim land and that seemed to be the best he could come up with. His expression took on a look of both concern and thoughtfulness, only adding to his lie.
Twitching his tail, though unvoluntarily, he rose and gave a slight, half nod half bow in what seemed to ben attempt at some sort of respect, his grey-blue eyes settling upon Gavin once again, though now they peered at him with a new gleam. There was distrust and unease there. He was no fool. He saw that Gavin was both larger and heavier then him and no doubt could out do him in a fight and so the best the skinny male could do was keep a cautious eye on the male and step lightly. He lapsed again into silence for a long moment before speaking out again, as if he half remembered that he should say it. "I'm Weston. Um. I'd like to stay in your pack?"

Taint looked from Gavin to Weston, his eyes flickering anxiously to each male. Could Weston really join Haden Valley? ...Stupid question. He knew that his Alpha would his old friend join; and no, not because of their friendship, but because Taint knew Weston to be the good sort of wolf. The black male rolled his eyes up to heaven at the arrival of Flyleaf, and stood up, to stand beside his friend. Flyleaf'd probably been stalking Gavin - her affection wasn't hard to spy. And what else wasn't hard? To smell the clearing full of wolves; they weren't exactly invisible. Shaking his head in exasperation, Taint listened to her words. “Gavin! Oh, Sir! Thank goodness I found you! I...I got lost!” Taint resisted the urge to roll his eyes again, and locked his own with Gavin, silently pleading for him to let Weston join. Wait...did Wes even want to? Turning his head slightly, so that he could see his friend, Taint let out a tiny huff of breath, but then the other wolf spoke. After Weston's words, Taint went back to his lazy, eyes half-closed look. Weston had asked to stay! He couldn't wait to bombard his friend with questions about the pack, about his old friends and rivalries.

Catching him quite off guard, his little medic's voice brought a momentary, small smile to his features before it disappeared. He swung his head around to face her as she arrived, limbs carrying her with a surprising speed from the pinewood; she came to rest between the trio of males and stood there, perhaps bewildered, before she seemed to realize her error and stepped quickly backwards, apparently finding refuge from the eyes of Taint and the so far unnamed rogue behind Gavin's substantial size. He chuckled, an odd sound to come from such a large creature, and craned back to address Fly. “You're quite alright dear, I can assure you. The boundaries are clearly marked; you'll know if you cross one, but as long as you don't, your safety is guaranteed.” He ended with a smile of the utmost benevolence, lowering his ivory-bibbed muzzle to place a gentle lick atop her head. It was true; he had spent days meticulously establishing his presence around Haden Valley's entire perimeter. It was also a factual statement for him to tell Flyleaf that her welfare would be closely guarded- and it would. The consequences issued towards any lupine that failed to either inhibit an attacker or in the very least alert the remainder of the pack towards an intruder were, to put it lightly, harsh. Gavin was not an Alpha to be crossed, as this brazen young male was about to discover. He would remain polite, of course, as always, but it would take a sheer fool to mistake the vexation curling through his future tones.
Gavin remained quiet, though if one were to judge by the depth of annoyance in his gaze, it would remain quite clear that there was a glowering pit of annoyance resting within him. Those eyes were drawn with a proverbial snap to the incessant twitch that seemed to plague the side of the young male's face, and then to the pale gaze of the lean newcomer. The towering leader's own gaze mirrored the other's, and he spoke, quite calmly, in his direction, voice low enough that it was doubtful that Taint or Fly could hear without putting a decent amount of effort forth to do so. “Are we going to have a problem?” He took a single step forward, attempting to clarify the fact that he had very little, if any, problems with encroaching on his own packland's space. At the words that the male spoke, the leader raised his brow. “Chased, you say?” he rumbled, not reading into Weston's voice enough to discern the deception. “Did you do something to bring on this unwanted attention, or was it mainly belligerent in nature with no real purpose?” Without waiting for the scrawny male to continue, Gavin directed his attentions to Taint, and closed his jaws as he caught the apprentice's imploring gaze. A confused smile brushed across his face (for he was not yet aware that the younger males were in any way associated) before he continued with what he was originally going to say: “Taint, when we get back to camp, do not let me forget to tell our scouts to be wary on their patrols tonight.”
Turning back to Weston, he acknowledged the half-hearted display of submission mentally, but outwardly showed no exceeding kindness. For one who was casting such unmerited glances, Gavin would inevitably demand a more flagrant display of respect- perhaps not here, in front of others, but the young wolf would feel the proverbial heat of the leader's anger eventually if his attitude and composure did not significantly improve. Nothing more than an almost inaudible growl rippled through the brindled giant's bulk at Weston's request for a good, long moment; he simply stared before finally speaking. “If you wish to join Haden Valley, then you will show me respect, as well as the remaining members. Any dishonesty, disloyalty, or otherwise despicable acts will be dealt with swiftly. We are a family here; just ask Fly or Taint. ” He nodded to his packmembers in turn before turning back to Weston. “We will give you shelter, food, and comfort, but you must obey pack laws and prove that you are deserving of the respect that your eventual-friends will give you. Do you understand? If you still wish to join, then you will follow me- my name is Gavin. Otherwise, please leave my packlands.” [/blockquote]

FLY L E A F ;; ooc;;done. I never thought of fly as a gavin stalker lol. that makes me oddly happy
The only thing that could make its way through Flyleaf’s head was thank god. Thank god she had found Gavin, thank god she was not lost, and thank god she had not wandered off pack territory. Now, all that was left was her social status. It was not difficult to see the obvious thoughts of her stupidity emerging from the unknown wolf; he was obviously a lot like Anevay in personality, always thinking himself as better than the rest of him. It was almost confusing that Taint would know someone that appeared that self-centered, and Taint himself, seemed quite nice, but Fly had know for a while now that opposites attract. It, in fact, hurt to see Taint roll his eyes up at her, Flyleaf let out a broken whimper voicing her discomfort.
All these feelings quickly vanished at the sound of Gavin’s voice. It was a strange sort of positive music, helpful and reassuring. The young she-wolf quickly mentally complemented herself for joining a pack with such a nice alpha. Thank god rolled through her again. Her face instantly broke into a huge grin from the lick she had received by him, she was happy to know someone cared about her well-being. Not that there was any thought in her mid that Gavin didn’t care about her to begin with.
A quick giggle mad its way through Flyleaf’s lips and she gave Gavin a shy lick back. She did not, quite obviously, want to give Taint the pleasure of teasing her and her amour later; nor did she want the stranger to get the wrong idea. It just made her happy, that was all. It did not occur to the young she-wolf that this might annoy the alpha; his glare had instantly turned into one of annoyance, and Fly regretted her haste. “Um, I’m sorry Gavin,” she squeaked, not wanting to follow where his eyes went. The stranger across from them was seemingly having fun, clicking his jaw in an annoying manner. He’d most likely laugh at them.
Gavin then seemed to be mumbling to himself, taking a step closer to the offender, giving him a glare. Hope instantly rose into the young wolf’s chest: maybe Gavin really wasn’t annoyed with her? But then again, it was not good to get one’s hopes up. Gavin’s new posture almost scared fly; he seemed so distant, so icy towards the trespasser. She did not even want to know what he was thinking. Oh, no, no no.
Flyleaf bowed her head quickly at the mention of her name, returning the alpha’s. It was tempting to speak, to say ‘Yes, Trespasser, I can tell you aaallll about Haden Valley!’, but she now did not want to seem too overly annoying. She glanced nervously towards the unknown wolf, wanting to know his response. Hopefully, it would be positive; she did not want to see Gavin more irked than he already was.

The young, sickly looking male, peered curiously from each wolf, taking in each one fully. There was of course, Taint. A friend, though Weston would most certainly not admit to such a thing. Although, if it ever came down to it, he'd most likely be the first one to Taint's aid. But of course, again, he would do everything to turn around the good deed and make it appear that he was, truely, thinking only of himself. Why the young male did such a thing was unexplainable. He had never truely harmed anyone in all his life--no, he wasn't even that threatening in apperance. But no matter what, he always seemed to ruin his image by acting selfish. It was clear, at times, that he was doing it purposely, but there would be no stopping him. And as annoying as it was to be around him at most times, he would most likely be the one to count on in a tight pinch. He'd try his darnest to help---only to turn it around of course and make everyone feel guilty about making him do something.
Taint, well, Weston couldn't recall much of his puphood, most likely a side-effect of his unnatural twitch that plagued him. But he did know that Taint was someone from his past and someone that he could rely on if he needed. He seemed pleasant enough, but again, Weston could not recall many of his past experiences. As sad as it seemed, it didn't bother Weston. What did he care? What mattered was the present. And the very near future--for instance, would he be alive tomorrow? Would he have a meal tonight? Probably. Well, at least he hoped so. His gaze then shifted to the new arrival. A female. He scowled towards her, finding her sudden apperance to be irritating, though anything sudden caused that reaction in him. Sudden movements where hard for him to really pick up at times. His mind sometimes failed him, functioning slowly. He saw her scurry behind the large male and then recieve a lick and then return one.
Now, Weston was openly staring, his mouth slightly gape at the strange display. The male has referred to her as my dear, yet she acted as though she were some sort of shy lover of his. But she looked like she could have been his daughter. Weston could not stop the shudder that visibly rippled through his body. Finally, he was able to lift his grey gaze up to the large male, listening to his comments, nodding his head quickly when he questioned him about being chased. He was about to say he had, indeed, been chased, but he stepped forwards, his expression hard and a growl rumbling from his chest like thunder. Frowning, Weston shifted uncomfortably, unconciously moving backwards slightly. The muscles in the right side of his face spasamed and his lip again twisted upwards, flashing a quick glance of his canine. It of course appeared to be a threat, but when his face relaxed, his eyes revealed no such intention. Instead, they watched Gavin with a curious interest, while he listened intently to what he had to say.
When he finished speaking, Weston bobbed his head quickly. "Yes yes. Respect. Honesty. I can do all those. I swear it." He fell into a cloud of silence, his pale eyes rolling upwards as if to stare at the sky, but instead, he seemed to be seeing nothing. His tail flicked once before laying absolutely still behind him, when finally he looked back towards Gavin and Fly--he would have been looking at Taint, but he was sitting beside him and therefore he could not look at him while looking at the leader. As if it where an after thought, he spoke up again. "Oh yeah. I have a twitch. So sorry if I keep movin'." As if to give strength to his claim, his jaw muscles controted so that he looked as though he where now sneering and then again relaxed and he was once again, for the most part, expressionless.
